Our Bread For Life!
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life.
He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and
he who believes in Me shall never thirst.”
John
6:35
The Spanish explorer, Juan Ponce de León, was
searching for the fountain of youth as he explored
Florida in 1513. An antidote to
death has always
been a human aspiration.
Jesus said, “I am the living bread which came
down from heaven. If
anyone eats of this bread,
he will live forever; and the bread that I shall give
is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the
world” (John 6:51).
His words caused no small disturbance even
among His true followers. Jesus wasn’t promising
the avoidance of physical death but spiritual death.
And He wasn’t suggesting that eating His physical
body was the way to consume the “bread” of which
He spoke. He spoke of spiritual, eternal life and
His
own impending death for the sins of the world.
We “consume” Jesus by believing in Him:
“He who believes in Me, though he may
die, he shall live” (John 11:25).
"When we
preach Jesus Christ, oh!
Then we are not putting out the plates,
and the knives and the forks for the feast,
but we are handing out the bread itself."
Charles Spurgeon
