Delights And Desires!
"Delight yourself also in the Lord, and He
shall give you the desires of your heart."
Psalm 37: 4
No resource was more valued in biblical lands than pure water.
Cities grew up around water supplies, like Jerusalem based on
ever-flowing waters of the Gihon Spring (which still flows today).
It is no wonder biblical writers used a spring or well as a
symbol of life. Solomon called heart a “wellspring of life”
(Proverbs 16:22). Thus, the heart was to be kept pure and
righteous; health of life depended on the health of the heart.
So when David wrote God would give “the desires of
your heart” to the one who delights in God,
he had in
mind a pure heart. Such a heart would be
consistent
with one who delights in God and His
ways.
It’s equivalent of Jesus telling His disciples to abide in Him
and His words in order to be given whatever they asked for
(John 15:7). Getting our prayers answered, or the desires of
our heart, presupposes a heart that delights in God.
God wants to delight in meeting the needs of His
children, in satisfying them with every good thing
(Deuteronomy 26:11).
"Though the gracious soul still desires more
of God, it never desires more than God."
Matthew Henry
